When the freezing winter cold settled over North Carolina in December, 85-year-old widow Nana Abernathy found herself in a desperate situation. Having recently lost her husband, her supply of firewood had completely run out, leaving her home freezing. With no immediate way to heat her house, she picked up the phone and called a local tree removal service, explaining her situation and making a humble request: she desperately needed firewood but wouldn’t be able to pay for it until her next Social Security check arrived.

Her call reached Paul Brittain, the owner of Brittain’s Tree and Crane Services in Connelly Springs. Little did Nana know, that single phone call was about to set off a chain reaction of kindness that would change her life forever.

The incredible unfolding of their story, captured in the viral images referenced as 703191625_1036419382403857_2223156866139603316_n.jpg, proves that small acts of kindness can heal communities.
