An NHS doctor has named five popular places where there is an increased risk of illness as disease is spreading in Europe this summer. Ecologists now warn that mosquito-borne diseases are an increasing concern in Europe.

According to the latest data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), invasive Aedes mosquitoes continue to spread. Among them is the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), causing local outbreaks of the viral infection chikungunya in Europe.

Dr Steven White, theoretical ecologist at UKCEH, said: “Where the mosquito has established there is a risk of local outbreaks of chikungunya and dengue. There were record numbers of local outbreaks of chikungunya in France and Italy – which are very popular with UK holidaymakers – in 2025.”
