On the afternoon that life changed forever, a young couple pulled their sedan to the shoulder of the Rodovia do Sol — a scenic but busy highway in Brazil’s Espírito Santo state — to attend to a flat tyre. With safety in mind, the pair and a sibling worked by the roadside to change the wheel. What appeared to be a routine interruption became a historic tragedy within moments.

The parked vehicle was a Chevrolet Cruze, stationary on the highway’s shoulder. As the family aided their effort, a second vehicle — described as a Chevrolet S10 pickup truck — came hurtling down the roadway. Witnesses described the tyres screeching, the pickup veering erratically, and then a violent impact that left the Cruze crumpled and shattered.

Emergency responders arrived quickly: firefighters, paramedics, and police found the scene in chaos. Three occupants of the Cruze were taken to hospital with serious injuries; one man and one woman did not survive. Investigators found no driver at the pickup’s scene — the truck had been abandoned, the operator gone on foot.
