Experts in accident prevention and public safety will be watching the investigation closely, both for its findings and for the recommendations that flow from them. In the aftermath of tragedies like this one, the systems and protocols that govern public safety are scrutinized, debated, and often revised. That process, though slow and often imperfect, is one of the primary mechanisms through which societies learn from catastrophe and reduce the likelihood of its recurrence.

For now, though, the most immediate task is simply to bear witness to what has happened and to support those who are living through its consequences. More than sixty-five people are gone. Their families are left to grieve. A community is left to find its footing in the aftermath of something it never expected and never could have fully prepared for.

The nation stands with them in that grief. And it waits, as they do, for the answers that only a full and honest investigation can provide.
