Reflecting on her own childhood in Chockie, Oklahoma, Reba recounted, “I made sure to play games with Shelby without letting him win.” This seemingly unconventional strategy stemmed from her desire to instill resilience in her son. “It’s critical to learn from obstacles,” she declared, emphasizing that life wouldn’t always hand them victories. She often conveyed this message through love, saying, “I love you dearly, but I also want others to like you.” The lessons were about more than just games—they were about cultivating character, humility, and respect for others.

Despite the pressures that come with being in the spotlight, Reba’s teachings appear to have resonated with Shelby. Known for being grounded, he has navigated life’s challenges with remarkable maturity. Even at a young age, Shelby faced difficulties, particularly with ADHD, which made certain everyday tasks more challenging. Reba observed that he struggled with reading early on, and as any concerned parent would, she stayed actively involved in his growth. “Today, he reads a ton of books,” she exclaimed with pride, noting that he had tackled ten books this year alone. Reba’s dedication, coupled with Shelby’s perseverance, is a powerful reminder that parental support can significantly impact a child’s success.

“Dad… my back hurts so much I can’t sleep. Mom said I shouldn’t tell you.”
