“My first thoughts are with the people who were injured and I hope they make a full and speedy recovery and to the people who witnessed it, it must have been an extremely shocking event.”

Mr Murphy said that he had confidence that gardaí would “unravel” what happened and that the people responsible will face “the full rigours of the law”.

He said that the area has always been busy on sunny evenings and there has never been any issues.

Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal West Grace Boland said that what happened was “simply unacceptable” and had shocked the whole community.

“People were very worried last night. There seems to have been gangs of people on the harbour here which unfolded into a big fight, there was cars being driven at people and then it came on down on the Harbour Road here.”

Ms Boland said that gardaí had carried out some patrols in the area earlier in the day yesterday.

“I think what happened probably happened fairly quickly last night. It seemed to unfold very quickly. We wouldnt’ be used to seeing incidents like that in Skerries and I do know the gardaí and ambulance got here in quite a speedy time,” she said.

Sinn Féin TD for the area Louise O’Reilly said that anyone with any footage or information should share it with gardaí.

She said she did not believe there were sufficient garda numbers in north county Dublin.
