Born Mary Beth Supinger on September 25, 1946, in Marshalltown, Iowa, she was blessed early on by the film industry’s guardian angels; her babysitter was none other than Jean Seberg . Mary Beth studied theater at the University of Iowa and New York University before making her stage debut in 1974 in an off-Broadway production. Throughout her career, she received three Tony Award nominations (the Iowa equivalent of the Molière Awards) for her performances in The Magistrate, a three-act farce (1975), Crimes of the Heart (1981), and Benefactors (1985-1986).

Her popularity skyrocketed in 1978 when she landed her first screen role, that of Joey, in Woody Allen ‘s Interiors , alongside the late Diane Keaton . She then appeared with Robin Williams in The World According to Garp (1982), and with Michelle Pfeiffer and Daniel Day-Lewis in Martin Scorsese ‘s The Age of Innocence (1993). This was followed by Six Degrees of Separation (1993), Autumn in New York (2000), The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005), The Dead Girl (2006), Lady in the Water (2006), and Young Adult (2011).
