The storm has caused extensive damage to power infrastructure, leaving hundreds of thousands of customers without electricity across multiple states. According to outage tracking data, approximately 370,000 customers nationwide were without power as of Wednesday afternoon.
In Nashville, the local electric service reported that crews had already restored power to more than 123,000 customers. However, tens of thousands of outages remained, and more than 300 damaged utility poles had been identified.
Power outages during extreme cold conditions increase the risk of secondary emergencies, including heating failures and medical equipment disruptions.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the ongoing cold wave as potentially one of the longest stretches of below-freezing temperatures in the city’s recorded history. Cold weather advisories remain in effect, and emergency services have expanded outreach to vulnerable populations.
Transportation was also affected. Ferry services in New York City were suspended due to ice accumulation in major waterways, including the East River, Hudson River, and New York Harbor.
The lingering effects of the storm have led to widespread disruptions across the country. School closures and remote learning were reported in multiple states, including Maryland, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Public safety officials continue to urge residents to limit travel where possible and to follow local advisories.
Forecasters say snowfall could begin as early as Friday and persist through the weekend, with the most immediate impacts expected along coastal regions. While uncertainty remains regarding the system’s exact path, officials caution that forecast updates are likely as the storm approaches.
Areas farther north, including parts of New England and the Mid-Atlantic, are also being monitored, though confidence in impacts remains lower at this time.
In addition to snow, forecasters warn that the developing system may bring strong, gusty winds. Where wind and snowfall overlap, reduced visibility and hazardous travel conditions are possible.
